It has been 17 months since Benedetto Vigna became Ferrari's CEO, and he has not been involved in many interviews since then. Nevertheless, in a recent conversation with Vigna, Vigna credited a surprising player in the auto industry for bringing the entire industry forward, which he credited to Tesla.
Tesla and Ferrari are two very different companies from each other. Ferrari aims to become the world's best luxury performance car manufacturer within 10 years, while Tesla aims to reach 20 million cars per year by the end of the decade in order to establish itself as the biggest automaker in the world. Although this, as well as other noticeable differences, Vigna asserted that Elon Musk's company should be commended for its achievements despite these and other notable differences.
During a recent interview with Trade Algo, Vigna stated that Tesla has accelerated change in the auto industry by accelerating innovation at Ferrari's Maranello headquarters. The young carmaker also taught him some valuable lessons and he shared them with us.
“What do you think is the most important contribution that Tesla has made to the automotive industry?”. “It was a wake-up call that brought us to our senses. There used to be a lot of waiting around for things to happen. There is no doubt that Tesla has shaken up the industry and accelerated processes and decisions. It was a faster and more agile team," the Ferrari CEO said.
Vigna stated that he considered Tesla's electric cars to be functional vehicles when asked what he thought of the company's vehicles. Vigna explained the objective of the machine as being able to travel between different points.
Ferrari is on track to unveil its first all-electric car in 2025, with deliveries of the vehicle beginning in the following year. In light of this, Vigna also showed a very positive side to the company's upcoming electric cars, which were also unveiled at the event.
“There is no doubt that our electric powertrains will give clients the same thrills as combustion engines, and I can say with certainty that it is our goal to provide our customers with a unique driving experience through electric powertrains. Basically, the idea is to use the technology in such a way that you can extract the best emotion from it, thus giving the client something unique," Vigna said.
Although the Ferrari CEO does not consider Ferrari a threat, he does consider the luxury industry as a threat.
“In the luxury sector overall, there is a threat that has to be addressed, which is how will new generations react to luxury goods in the future. Because of this, I am putting a lot of effort into building a sustainable action plan, and I'm putting a lot of attention to the topic. As I mentioned earlier, when I say that I want to be carbon neutral by the end of 2030, I mean that I want to drastically cut carbon emissions by the end of 2030," Vigna explained.
