It has been disclosed today by Western Digital that its network has been compromised and an unauthorized party has gained access to multiple company systems as a result.
It was discovered last Sunday, March 26, by the California-based computer drive manufacturer and provider of data storage services, that there had been a security breach on the company's network.
There is an investigation underway, and law enforcement authorities are working with the company to coordinate their efforts with regard to the investigation.
“Immediately following the discovery of the incident, the Company implemented incident response efforts and began an investigation with the assistance of leading outside security and forensic experts,” Western Digital reports in its public disclosure.
The company believes that, based on the evidence it has found so far, the intruder had access to some of the company's financial records.
My Cloud service down
As a result of the attack, the storage maker has taken additional security measures to ensure that the systems and operations of the company are protected. There is a possibility that some of the Western Digital services may be affected by these steps.
The breach "has caused and may continue to cause disruption to elements of the Company's business activities," the company stated.
Many users of Western Digital’s network-attached storage (NAS) service My Cloud have been reporting that they have not been able to access their cloud-hosted media repositories since Sunday.
When trying to log into the service at the time of writing, a "503 Service Temporarily Unavailable" error appears when trying to access the service, including the Home version.
Since the first reports of the outage have been made, it has been more than 24 hours since the cloud, proxy, web, authentication, e-mail, and push notifications have been unavailable.
My Cloud, My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo, My Cloud OS5, SanDisk IBI, and SanDisk IXpand Wireless Charger are among the items that are impacted, according to the My Cloud service status page.
It is expected that Western Digital will release an update about the outage of its My Cloud service by the end of the day.
The BleepingComputer team has contacted the company for additional comment about the recent breach of their network, and will update this article as soon as a statement has been provided.
