As part of the Windows 11 update, Microsoft will promote its new Bing chatbot, which draws on artificial intelligence capabilities from startup OpenAI.
Windows is the largest contributor to Microsoft's revenue, driving 9% of total revenue, but Bing is not terribly popular. It has an estimated 82% market share as of 2021, which makes it the most popular operating system in the world. In addition to the familiar Start button, there is now a link that takes users to a refreshed version of Bing, which is a big step forward in an industry where technology has at times been inaccurate or offensive. Microsoft might be able to take on Google with this gesture after the search giant recently allowed "trusted testers" to try its new Bard chatbot, which might be able to compete with Bing's new ability to answer queries from the web.
“During the event just three weeks ago at which the new version of Microsoft Bing was unveiled,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that it was a new day in search. "It is a new paradigm in the field of search. It is inevitable that rapid innovation will take place in the future."
After entering a query in the search portion of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, a user will be able to see a list of search results in addition to a new chat button. When the person clicks on this button, an Edge browser window will be opened and the Bing chatbot will respond to the person's query, according to a Microsoft spokesperson via email.
In the next few years, Bing will become a more regular part of Windows 11, Microsoft's operating system that was released in 2021. Support for Windows 10 is set to end in 2025, and many people have not yet upgraded to Windows 10. Approximately 69% of Windows PCs were still running Windows 10 at the end of January, while 18% were running Windows 11 according to StatCounter estimates at that time.
The chat button will not be visible to everyone right away in Windows 11 due to some technical difficulties. There have been over a million people who have been given access to the new Bing, a small number compared to the estimated 100 million people who used OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot back in January.
In time, the taskbar change might lead to higher use of Bing in the future as a result of the taskbar change. There are more than 500 million people who use the Windows search box every month, according to a blog post by Microsoft's product chief, Panos Panay.
The Bing search engine has been available from the Windows taskbar for years now, and Microsoft earns money by displaying advertisements in the search results after people type in certain queries in the search box. There could be a financial upside if the updated Bing is used more frequently. On February 7, Amy Hood, the company's chief financial officer, said that Microsoft would gain $2 billion in additional revenue for every percentage point of revenue it picks up in the search advertising market.
There was a survey conducted by Jefferies about the new Bing, and of the 127 consumers who tried it, 86% said they were impressed or very impressed, but just 17% said they would make Bing their new default search engine, according to a note to clients dated Monday.
The blog post by Panay stated that users of Windows 11 on version 22H2 can request the new version of the operating system with the improved Bing, along with other improvements, by opening the Windows Update section of the Settings app and clicking the "Check for updates" button.
