Lufthansa AG has unveiled a new cabin configuration that will give passengers more than half a dozen seating options in business class alone. Additionally, redesigned premium economy and first-class berths will be available to passengers as more customers choose the most expensive options.
The world's largest airline group, Air France-KLM, is deploying its Allegris product on the Boeing Co. 747-8 jumbo jet this year and will expand it to 80 new aircraft, including the Boeing 787 and 777 widebodies and Airbus SE's A350. There are a number of options available to passengers for an additional fee, including double beds, extra-wide entertainment screens, and cradles for parents traveling with children.
“Our aim at Lufthansa's namesake airline is to ensure that our guests have an experience as unique as possible, which is why we focus on maximum individuality and exclusivity,” said Jens Ritter, Lufthansa's chief executive officer, at a launch event in Berlin on Tuesday.
As the post-pandemic boom in travel shows few signs of slowing down, airlines are investing heavily in new products to corner market share in order to maintain their position. In order to keep up with the likes of Qatar Airways and Emirates in terms of quality of service, Lufthansa has launched new seating products worth €2.5 billion ($2.7 billion).
As a result of losing its five-star rating from Skytrax, an international air transport rating organization, last year, Lufthansa has now decided to increase its seating options for its passengers. The airline's reputation has fallen further as a result of a series of strikes and staff shortages at hubs like Frankfurt, leading to a reduction in Lufthansa's capacity for the upcoming summer season, as a result of a lack of personnel on the ground.
First-class cabins in the new aircraft are equipped with sliding doors that create a separate space that can accommodate two occupants at the same time. The new premium economy seats can be reclined without obstructing the space of the passenger behind them, whereas business-class seats offer the option of extra legroom for tall travelers.
There will be an increase in yields on first-class and business-class seats as a result of the additional options the airline will be offering. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic that grounded flights in 2020, Lufthansa was rescued by the German government and repaid its 9 billion-euro bailout ahead of schedule shortly afterward.
