The deal with Tesla, which echoes the massive change in mobile-phone billing systems in recent years, is expected to continue through December 2016, when they plan to offer unlimited overnight home charging in Texas for $30 per month.
As much as Tesla is not the only automaker to contemplate such a move, the announcement made by the automaker on Wednesday at its investor day is a definite sign that things are about to change.
Many power traders throughout history have said that electricity could become so cheap that the profits will be driven by the sale of services rather than by selling megawatts themselves at a time when electricity is expected to become so cheap. The shift from a specific number of minutes each month to an unlimited plan may be taking place now in Texas, which is similar to what has been happening in the mobile phone market for years now.
Texas is Tesla's prime market, and that shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. When wind power is robust at night, electricity generating from the state's grid can be extremely cheap, causing a situation where supply exceeds demand.
Other benefits include utilities preferring that homeowners charge their EVs over night, when power demand is lower.
Trade Algo said that auto companies getting more involved with home charging will avoid overloading the grid as the fleet of electric vehicles grows.
