This is the first time Tesla has issued a voluntary recall for its heavy-duty electric trucks since the company began shipping the heavy-duty electric trucks to customers in December 2022.
There have been recalled filings on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website indicating that 35 semi trucks are affected by the recall. There was a defect in the electronic parking brake valve module used in the construction of these trucks, which was discovered by the supplier Bendix in February 2023.
Due to the defect, drivers were left vulnerable to "rollaway" incidents, which increased the likelihood of a crash occurring. There has been a recall notice issued regarding defective modules that could fail to “move into the park position when the parking brake is activated” as a result leaving drivers unaware that their Semi could roll away. A defect in a parking brake component has not resulted in any crashes or damage to the vehicle, according to the filings made by the plaintiffs.
Even though Tesla first showed off the design of the Semi back in late 2017, it started manufacturing the trucks in Nevada just last year. The trucks were then delivered to the first customer Pepsi back in December of last year at a marketing event that Tesla held.
Tesla announced on the NHTSA website it would "replace the parking brake valve module with a revised part with improved internals that will prevent air leaks and will allow drivers to engage and disengage parking brakes with ease."
Elon Musk's electric vehicle company is expected to issue a report on its production and deliveries of vehicles for the first quarter of 2023 this weekend. Prior to this quarter, Tesla did not break out Semi delivery and production numbers in its quarterly reports.
