Sega is reportedly close to completing the acquisition of Rovio Entertainment, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The Angry Birds mobile game franchise was acquired by Rovio for $1 billion.
Instead, Rovio watched rivals like Candy Crush expand rapidly, eroding interest in Angry Birds. The iOS version of the original Angry Birds game from Rovio was renamed Red's First Flight after it was just taken down from the Google Play Store. To divert gamers from the original game's buy-once-play-forever business model and onto its profitable freemium successors, the shift was made.
Prior to March, Rovio and Israeli developer Playtika discussed an $800 million agreement for Playtika to acquire the company. Now that Angry Birds is located in Finland, Sega may soon control it. The first mobile game to reach 1 billion downloads was the original Angry Birds by Rovio (a record certified by Guinness World Records).
Additionally, Rovio stated that its combined game library had had 5 billion downloads in the previous year. Therefore there's a case to be made for the corporation to charge a sixth of a dollar for every download.
