Microsoft and Nuance bring ChatGPT's successor to healthcare

Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Express, an artificial intelligence-powered clinical notes app for healthcare professionals, was unveiled on Monday by Microsoft's speech recognition subsidiary Nuance Communications.

By instantly producing a rough draft of a clinical note following a patient visit, DAX Express promises to lessen the administrative responsibilities placed on physicians. The system is driven by a combination of OpenAI's most recent model, GPT-4, and ambient A.I., which derives insights from unstructured data such as chats.

In order to care for more patients, Nuance wants to see doctors "get back to the love of medicine," according to Diana Nole, executive vice president of the company's healthcare division.

“Our ultimate goal,” she added, “was to lessen the cognitive strain and the amount of time that they had to spend on these administrative duties.”

In 2021, Microsoft purchased Nuance for $16 billion. The company makes money by marketing devices for voicemails, customer service calls, and doctor appointments that can detect and transcribe speech.

The other services that Nuance presently offers on the market are enhanced by DAX Express.

More than 550,000 doctors use Nuance's Dragon Medical One voice recognition application, according to Nole, who added that this technology will be made available through it. Clinical notes produced by DAX Express will display on the Dragon Medical One desktop. Dragon Medical One is a cloud-based workflow assistant where doctors may use their voices to traverse clinical systems and retrieve patient information rapidly.

Moreover, DAX Express expands upon the first version of DAX, which Nuance released in 2020. Clinical notes are created by DAX from verbal patient encounters and are then reviewed by humans to make sure they are accurate and of the highest caliber. Within four hours of the appointment, the notes are added to the medical file.

In contrast, DAX Express produces clinical notes quickly, allowing doctors to immediately evaluate automated summaries of their patient encounters.

“Because every specialty and patient contact is unique, we think that doctors and other clinicians will desire a combination of all of these. And for all of these different kinds of visits, you want to have effective tools,” Nole said.

Trade Algo was not given any information by Nuance on the cost of these applications. According to the business, the expense of Nuance's technology varies depending on the size of a particular health system and the number of users.

This summer, DAX Express will first be accessible in a private preview setting. That will rely on the feedback the business receives from its initial customers, according to Nole, thus Nuance is unsure of when the technology will be more readily accessible.

HIPAA and other rules restrict the sensitive nature of patient information. According to Alysa Taylor, a corporate vice president in Microsoft's Azure division, DAX Express upholds the foundational tenants of the company's responsible AI. a framework that every AI is guided by. investments made by the business and additional security measures put in place by Nuance.

Customers of Nuance are bound by tight data agreements, and all data is fully secured and processed in HIPAA-compliant settings.

Nole continued, "Although the A.I. will assist doctors and clinicians with the administrative tasks, professionals are still involved at every stage. Before notes generated by DAX Express are added to a patient's electronic health record, doctors can amend them and sign off on them.”

Using DAX Express, according to her, will ultimately help to enhance both the patient and physician experience.

Nole stated that the doctor and the patient might speak directly by facing one another. "The patient feels heard. The experience is highly regarded.”
