Chinese technology giant Xiaomi unveiled augmented reality glasses on Monday as part of its effort to expand beyond smartphones.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition is the name of the device that we are referring to. The concept of Augmented Reality refers to the superposition of digital media over the real world that a person can see in front of him or her in order to enhance it.
This is just a concept technology, according to Xiaomi, and the glasses will not be available for sale at the moment. Despite this, Nokia's announcement at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the world's largest mobile industry trade show, is a testament to the company's ambition to become a player in the market.
Xiaomi will join the likes of Microsoft if it launches the product,
AR products on the market include HoloLens and Google Glass Enterprise.
Google, Microsoft, and Apple are among the technology giants that are interested in the concept of augmented or mixed reality as a way to bring new experiences to consumers. As a result of the technology being described as a key component of a "metaverse" concept, it has often been described as the backbone of this concept.
“Augmented reality is a technological advancement that will affect everything,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement last year.
As of right now, Apple hasn't announced or announced any kind of virtual or augmented reality headset, nor has it acknowledged it.
Apple is expected to unveil its mixed reality headset this spring, with consumer deliveries starting in the fall of 2023, according to a report by Trade Algo this year.
“According to Leo Gebbie, an analyst at CCS Insight, there is widespread agreement within the technology industry that AR smart glasses could be the next significant form of mobile computing after the smartphone in the future.
Gesture control
A Xiaomi representative said that its AR glasses are lightweight and can be connected wirelessly to a smartphone. The company also said that the device offers a "retina-quality display" so users are able to view virtual objects as clearly as they would if they were looking at a physical object.
It was also revealed that the headset can be used to control a variety of tasks with gesture control from the wearer of the headset, which is based in Beijing, China. While wearing the glasses, users will raise their hands in front of them while wearing them and then move their hands and fingers in specific ways in order to activate specific functions within the glasses. Xiaomi for example stated that "apps are launched and exited with the thumb sliding on the index finger." As an example,
By doing this, you would be able to use your smartphone without touching it.
Using this kind of interaction, Xiaomi believes that human-computer interaction may take a different direction in the future, illustrating one of the directions the company believes it will take in the future.
Xiaomi has said that the company's new headset will be compatible with its flagship Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro smartphones which were launched globally on Sunday.
Despite being one of the biggest players in the world of smartphones, Xiaomi is looking to unlock revenue from other devices as well. With a product range ranging from TVs to electric scooters, the company has introduced a wide variety of devices over the last few years.
“There are a lot of concerns about Xiaomi's new AR glasses that feel more like a stake in the ground than an actual product launch. The fact that Chinese rivals such as Oppo and TCL have also shown off AR devices demonstrates how keen they are to catch up with the competition," Gebbie said.
