Meta's Attempt to Mimic Telegram by Launching "Instagram Channels."

February 18, 2023
minute read

Mark Zuckerberg announced the debut of Instagram's new broadcast channels on Thursday, a move that can be viewed as a rip-off of a feature previously available in the Telegram app.

Today, subscribers to a channel may receive updates and messages from their favorite content providers. Like Telegram Channels, followers will not be able to post, but they will be able to "emoji-react" to content and vote in polls.

In his channel, aptly termed "Meta Channel," Zuckerberg aims to deliver news and updates on the company's products and technologies. According to him, he will be the first to break the news on Meta Channel, which is a sly method to gain more subscribers.

The function is undergoing testing with a select number of producers, some of whom plan to begin broadcast channels the same day the news is released.

If given permission, you will be able to establish a channel from your Instagram inbox, and shortly you will be able to pin the channel link to your profile to make it simpler for others to subscribe. You may make your channels visible to all of your subscribers or restrict access to paying subscribers exclusively.

Instagram wants to help companies interact with their audiences more effectively.

This is Instagram's most recent effort to capitalize on the increasing popularity of direct messaging within the app, where more users spend time than on Stories or the main feed.

Meta thinks this a critical problem that must be resolved. While the general use of social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram is increasing, recent research by Trade Algo indicates that users publish less personal updates and are less engaged with the services than in the past.

According to Trade Algo, "data collected in the middle of the fourth quarter revealed that time spent on [Facebook] increased globally, particularly in developed economies, over the last year."

Channels may provide an extra entry point for this change by enabling content producers and businesses to engage with their audience more naturally and authentically.

This might be a simple method for strengthening ties with the intended audience. According to Zuckerberg, the Channels feature is only available on the Instagram app, but it will become available on Messenger and Facebook "in the next months."
