Known as the world's second-largest brewer, Heineken Holding NV is a holding company controlled by Bill Gates that has acquired a minority stake in the company for about $902 million.

Heineken Holding, a major Dutch beer maker, filed a filing last week with the Dutch regulator AFM, indicating that Microsoft founder Steve Ballmer had bought 3.8% of the brewery. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Trust and his individual account bought 6.65 million shares of Heineken Holding, and four million shares through his individual account through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.

At an average closing share price price of €848.2 million ($902 million), Trade Algo calculated that the shares are worth €848.2 million ($902 million) based on Trade Algo calculations.

Fomento Economico Mexicano SAB sold a portion of its holdings in Heineken for €3.7 billion on the same day Gates acquired its stake. As part of a strategic review last week, Coca-Cola bottler and convenience store operator Femsa announced plans to get rid of its shares in Heineken.

In an accelerated share offering, Femsa said it would offer shares in Heineken NV worth €1.9 billion at 91 europips, while stock in Heineken Holding worth €1.3 billion at 75 europips in its offering. With a 50% stake in Heineken Holding, the company is the owner of the brewery that makes the name-brand beer along with Amstel, Moretti, and Sol among others.

Additionally, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust foundation has invested in the Dutch online grocer Picnic BV, and it has purchased a 1.34% stake in the Dutch fertilizer manufacturer OCI NV through the Gates Foundation Trust.

In recent years, it has established itself as one of the most powerful nonprofit institutions in the world, employing almost 1,800 staffers and spending nearly $80 billion because of its nonprofit work. It was not immediately clear whether or not Heineken would respond to a request for comment, nor did the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
