Google Launches Bard A.I. to Counter ChatGPT

It was announced on Monday that Google will roll out a chatbot called Bard in the coming weeks that are powered by artificial intelligence. Trade Algo's previous reporting was confirmed in the announcement. A rival AI service, ChatGPT, created by OpenAI, will directly compete with Bard.

LaMDA, or Language Model for Dialogue Applications, is the company's large language model behind Bard. The company said in a blog post on Monday that it will allow "trusted testers" to test the conversation technology before making it widely available.

In response to ChatGPT, the popular chatbot backed in part by Microsoft, Trade Algo reported last week that Google is testing some of these features with its employees. As part of the new search desktop designs, a chatbot called "Apprentice Bard" and a question-and-answer search feature was included.

“In Search soon, you'll get AI-powered features that help you understand complex information and multiple perspectives, so you can learn more from the web and quickly understand the big picture. Sundar Pichai wrote, “Whether it is seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from keyboardists and guitar players, or learning more about related topics, like how to get started as a beginner.”

In terms of explaining new discoveries from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope to a nine-year-old, the company used Bard to simplify complex topics.

ChatGPT's sudden popularity prompted employees to raise concerns about the company's competitive edge in AI at a recent all-hands meeting.

At the time, Google's artificial intelligence chief, Jeff Dean, told employees that Google had a higher “reputational risk” than a small startup if they provided incorrect information. Google's CEO and Pichai teased, however, that similar products might be available this year to the general public.

In addition to being a leader in AI, Google's primary business is search engine optimization. Over the past few weeks, managers have asked for more employee feedback on the efforts.

Assuring transparency and safety, and grounding Bard's responses in real-world information, will take external feedback and internal testing into account.
