Ryder will be supplied with 4,000 electric delivery vans from BrightDrop, a company owned by General Motors, during the course of the next three years. It includes BrightDrop's upcoming Zevo 400 model and the Zevo 600 vans, 200 of which Ryder is going to order in the next few months.
Ryder claims that the business expects to deploy the 2024 Zevo 600 and 400 models "as early as summer 2023 and into the first quarter of 2024" in addition to bringing the 2023 Zevo 600 vans to its rental fleet in California, Texas, and New York later this year. The Zevo 600 and Zevo 400 vans from BrightDrop both have a range of up to 250 miles on a full charge. However, the 600 is larger and can accommodate a cargo capacity of over 600 cubic feet as opposed to the 400.
BrightDrop has already agreed to give businesses like Walmart, FedEx, DHL, and Hertz thousands of its electric vans in addition to Ryder. The EV manufacturer claims to have over 30 business clients so far and to have begun shipping more than 500 of the Zevo 600 vans made at its CAMI assembly plant in Canada. By the end of 2023, BrightDrop is expected to generate $1 billion in revenue, and by 2025, it hopes to produce 50,000 electric vehicles annually at its CAMI plant.
In the market for electric delivery vans, BrightDrop faces some competition. For instance, Rivian has already agreed to provide Amazon with its delivery vans, and Ford will soon receive a large order from the USPS for nearly 9,000 E-Transit cars. Mercedes-Benz, meantime, has said that its eSprinter van will arrive in the US in the second half of this year, despite the fact that it is still without any formal delivery partners.
