The tech giant Google on Tuesday allowed some developers and businesses to access the kinds of artificial intelligence that have gained attention since Microsoft's ChatGPT was launched last year, which was backed by Google.
It is expected that Google's cloud computing unit will provide testers with the ability to "incorporate generative AI into apps" or put them to work on the company's own platform in the future.
"Google Cloud is in a position to enable a whole new generation of builders, innovators, developers, and doers to harness the power of artificial intelligence in novel ways with this platform," said Ritu Jyoti, vice president of IDC's Artificial Intelligence Group, in a statement.
The new APIs will allow developers and businesses to make AI models using Google's cloud service "easy, safe, and scalable.", according to a blog post by Google's Thomas Kurian. The APIs and products will allow developers and businesses to build AI models on the cloud that will mimic human behavior, he said.
Among the features Google is hoping to make available to a wider audience is a feature called generative AI, which will be able to use prompts in order to summarize information or to write in a conversational manner.
"With Gmail and Google Docs, (testers) will just need to type in their desired topic, and a draft will be created for you instantly," Kurian wrote.
"After that, they can elaborate on or shorten the message, or adjust the tone in order to make it more playful or professional based on the context," he added.
As result of putting generative AI in the hands of developers, businesses, and governments around the world, it can make it possible for the technology to achieve its full potential, according to a blog post written by Google Cloud AI vice presidents June Yang and Burak GokTurk.
"For the most part, organizations have been unable to access generative AI, let alone customize it, and it is possible that the technology is prone to producing inaccurate information, which could erode trust between organizations," Yang and GokTurk stated.
"A new generation of tools is needed for organizations to be able to build generative AI applications that are easily integrated with existing systems," they said in the report.
It is believed that Google's generative AI can help organizations in many ways, including brainstorming, producing copy, generating media assets, and analyzing their data.
As the software has been out for quite some time, global tech giants have been attempting to compete with Microsoft -- which has pledged billions of dollars to OpenAI, the software's creator -- by releasing announcements on how they will also integrate generative artificial intelligence into their own platforms and applications.
Last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the Facebook-owned company was creating a new product group to come up with ways to "turbocharge" their Artificial Intelligence efforts within their company.
In addition, Snapchat, the photo-sharing app popular with teens, is introducing a chatbot powered by OpenAI's ChatGPT.
It is expected that subscribers will have access to the "MyAI" tab in the near future, which will enable users to interact with the chatbot much like they would a friend.
At a special event on Thursday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is expected to demonstrate how Microsoft is integrating artificial intelligence into its widely used business software in a way that is similar to ChatGPT, according to a report.
"The potential of generative AI and the opportunities it unlocks excite us," said Google's Kurian.
"There is so much to be done, from enabling people to express themselves creatively to assisting developers to build brand new types of applications, to helping businesses and government organizations engage their customers and constituents in a way they never thought possible," he said.
