Tesla CEO poked fun at Bill Gates' understanding of artificial intelligence in a tweet on Monday.
Musk tweeted: "I remember the early meetings with Gates. His understanding of AI was limited, and it still is."
Musk posted the tweet in response to a tweet made by another Twitter user about Gates' engagement in OpenAI and his general optimism regarding AI.
Gates discussed the potential impact of AI on labor, healthcare, and education in a blog post that was published last week.
The OpenAI team and the founder of Microsoft have been meeting since 2016, according to Gates, and he most recently did so in September. Whether he attended that 2022 conference in his capacity as a part-time advisor to Microsoft is unknown. After resigning as CEO in 2000, Gates departed Microsoft's board in 2020.
Together with other Silicon Valley business leaders, Musk cofounded OpenAI and contributed $1 billion to the company in 2015.
Musk resigned from the board of directors of OpenAI in 2018 and has since been critical of the organization, notably with regard to its partnership with Microsoft. The billionaire said in February that OpenAI, which had been established as an open-sourced, nonprofit organization at first, had changed into "a closed-source maximum-profit enterprise effectively controlled by Microsoft."
In 2019, Microsoft contributed $1 billion to OpenAI. The collaboration gave the business access to AI technology for licensing. Since then, Microsoft has declared intentions to invest "multiyear, multibillion dollars" in the business and has even introduced a new iteration of its Bing search engine in cooperation with OpenAI.
Yet, Gates did not always strongly support OpenAI. He had concerns about the company's technology when Microsoft first considered partnering with the business, according to The Information. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the billionaire was "extremely active" in researching OpenAI's technology in preparation for the 2019 cooperation and had doubts about AI's capacity to comprehend and contextualize human speech.
According to Semafor, Musk is "furious" about ChatGPT's enormous popularity. According to the news source, Sam Altman and the other cofounders of OpenAI rejected Musk's plan to operate the business alone in the early months of 2018.
Gates and Musk have a history of conflict. As they disagreed on the severity of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020, the two millionaires got into their first argument. In the same year, after Gates revealed he had chosen to purchase a Porsche Taycan over a Tesla, Musk claimed his "conversations with Gates have been underwhelming." The Tesla CEO even went so far as to make fun of Gates' weight while accusing him of shorting the stock of the automobile manufacturer.
