Chevrolet Camaro production to cease by GM following a sales slump

March 22, 2023
minute read

Early in the next year, General Motors will stop producing the Chevrolet Camaro in its present iteration as it makes the switch to all-electric vehicles.

The Detroit-based carmaker stated the current sixth-generation muscle car will not be the "end of Camaro's narrative," but it did not reveal a replacement or the following iteration of the vehicle.

Although we won't be introducing a replacement right away, Chevy Vice President Scott Bell told the public that the Camaro's saga was far from over.

The latest vehicle went into production at the end of 2016, although it has only achieved poor sales in the dwindling market for American-made performance vehicles.

To mark the conclusion of Camaro manufacturing at a General Motors factory in mid-Michigan in January 2024, the carmaker will offer a "collector's edition" package on numerous 2024 Camaro models, including the top-tier ZL1.

Further information about the collector's edition will be released at a later date, according to GM. A GM spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the Camaro moniker will be used for an EV, as the firm expects to sell only electric vehicles by 2035.

As automakers shift to all-electric cars, the Camaro is part of a diminishing niche of American performance vehicles with V6 and V8 engines.

According to Edmunds, sales of mainstream performance cars from Detroit automakers such as the Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro, Ford Mustang, and Dodge muscle cars peaked at more than 394,000 units in 2015. Since then, sales of the vehicles have fallen, with two-door coupes like the Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang seeing a roughly 50% reduction from their peak in July 2022.

Several automobiles have developed to provide smaller engines with less power, yet they can still be associated with loud, gas-guzzling vehicles. There is also greater competition from automakers outside of Detroit, particularly EV producers; a shift in customer preferences away from cars and toward more practical crossovers; and a potential shift in performance culture.
