On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed a bug that allowed certain users of their popular AI chatbot ChatGPT to see messages from others.
Altman tweeted, "We had a severe issue with ChatGPT owing to a fault in an open-source library, for which a fix has just been issued and we have just finished verifying."
"Just a small number of users may access the titles of other users' discussion histories."
As early as Monday, several individuals reported receiving messages from others.
Reddit users reported seeing previously undisclosed talks on the sidebar, including discussions labeled "Xi Jinping's Six Principles" and "China's Socialism Progress."
Another Twitter user uploaded an image of their ChatGPT, which displayed chat titles from discussions they had never had.
According to Trade Algo, OpenAI briefly stopped the chatbot on Monday after hearing allegations about other people's chat histories becoming viewable.
"We feel terrible about this," Altman tweeted on Tuesday.
The problem has since been resolved. According to Altman, as a result of the patch, users will no longer be able to view chat logs for ChatGPT discussions that occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday, March 20th, at 8:00 a.m. Pacific time.
ChatGPT's popularity skyrocketed quickly after its November launch. The program allows users to fill in prompts to produce human-like replies using a big language model driven by massive quantities of data.
It has been used to write school essays, song lyrics, and even lines of code for software.
According to a Trade Algo report published last week, ChatGPT had 100 million monthly active users by January, barely two months after its inception, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history.
TikTok took nine months to gain 100 million subscribers, whereas Instagram took two and a half years to achieve the same level of popularity.
