Bitcoin war unleashes 'badass' new mascot for Greenpeace

Greenpeace's "Skull of Satoshi" image criticizes Bitcoin's consensus algorithm, yet it has become the new mascot for Bitcoin fans.

The latest attack on B emphasize its effects on the environment. Instead, Bitcoiners have complimented the artwork highly and wish to make it their mascot.

The campaign to transform Bitcoin's consensus method to a proof-of-stake (PoS) model was launched by the climate action group on March 23 in collaboration with artist activist Benjamin Von Wong.

The "Skull of Satoshi," created by Greenpeace, is an 11-foot (3.3-meter) tall skull with the Bitcoin logo with red laser eyes that has become a meme among proponents of the digital currency.

The skull is constructed from recycled electronic garbage, and "smoking stacks" are placed atop it to symbolize the "fossil fuel and coal pollution" brought on by Bitcoin mining and the "millions of computers" required to confirm network transactions.

The appreciation for the artwork among Bitcoin enthusiasts, some of whom had already adopted it as a sort of mascot, caused Greenpeace's marketing campaigns to take an unexpected turn.

The artwork was dubbed "badass" by Will Foxley, head of media strategy at cryptocurrency miner Compass Mining, who also changed his Twitter profile picture to a photo of the Skull of Satoshi.

The artwork is the "most metal Bitcoin artwork to date," according to a tweet by Nic Carter, co-founder of Coin Metrics, on March 24.

Others criticized the picture Greenpeace used, with one Twitter user claiming that the skull's head's smokestacks looked like nuclear cooling towers that were releasing steam.

The campaign by Greenpeace, other environmental organizations, and Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple, was introduced around a year ago.

It aims to pressure Bitcoin developers, miners and the government, and claims 30 “key” entities could move Bitcoin from proof-of-work if they agreed to the change.
