Bitcoin Traders Fired Back To Network Allegations

February 17, 2023
minute read

A report claimed that a select few Bitcoin maintainers form the core of the largest cryptocurrency.

The majority of the Bitcoin network, often known as "Bitcoin Core," is currently overseen by just six maintainers, the report claims.

The digital ledger for Bitcoin is updated on the network's computers by BTC Core, an open-source program. It determines the parameters of the network and how the nodes communicate and work.

Branded as Secret Bitcoin Saviors, "Maintainers"

The author of the paper claims that at least once, the maintainers fixed a bug in secret that might have rendered the biggest cryptocurrency project by market size worthless. For instance, programmer Matt Corallo allegedly found a programming fault that caused inflation in 2018.

The people known as maintainers have been referred to be Satoshi Nakamoto's successors. According to the report, a wider developer community helps them ensure that the program continues to function correctly on contemporary operating systems. However, maintainers differ from these "helper" developers in that they can write new or modified versions of the code and add them to the GitHub repository.

Four Bitcoin Core maintainers are alleged to have left their positions in the past 18 months owing to exhaustion or legal risk, according to the Trade Algo. According to reports, 17 have occurred since 2009.

On the other side, some developers claim that the widespread use of Bitcoin Core contradicts with the cryptocurrency's intention to keep its decentralization. The use of grants and money for this project raises further ethical concerns for Trade Algo.

Dollar vs. Bitcoin centralization debate

Proponents of bitcoin began making memes right away. The destiny of the U.S. currency is dependent on one enigmatic lawyer, a Twitter user as @BitcoinIsSaving noted. Here, they're alluding to Jerome Powell, the head of the Federal Reserve, who the cryptocurrency community frequently demonizes.

Trade Algo also emphasized that companies like Block Inc., the digital payments firm led by Jack Dorsey, are on the list of grant providers. It is essential to comprehend that maintainers do not manage Bitcoin, said Joe Burnett, Chief Analyst at Blockware Solutions, in response.

In the open network, anyone may post a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP), which is a change to the code. However, a BIP-compliant editor needs the approval of at least 90% of the miners in order to change Bitcoin Core. The option for the nodes to update to a new software version is only available after that.
