Apple has agreed to a multi-year agreement with Canal+, a major French premium television channel and streaming service. From April 20, all current and prospective Canal+ members in France and a few other European countries will be able to enjoy Apple TV+ content for free.
This is an unusual agreement because Canal+ isn't just bundling Apple TV+ into its services. It's not like carrier arrangements, in which telecom firms sometimes provide a few months of Apple TV+, Disney+, or Netflix with their most costly subscription plans.
Instead, Apple TV+ programming will be available straight in the Canal+ app (myCanal). Certain series, such as 'The Morning Show,' 'Foundation,' and 'Teheran,' will even be shown on Canal+'s premium TV channels for those who still watch live television.
Canal+ has stated on Twitter that its members would not be able to access Apple TV+ using the Apple TV app. This will still need a separate membership — but I don't see why consumers would pay to see stuff that they can already access through another app.
Apple's senior VP of services, Eddy Cue, told Variety that this isn't simply a one-time arrangement to increase Apple TV+ in France. "This is not a promotion, and it is not a one-time event." "It's been a long time and hopefully something that will stay forever in my imagination," Cue says.
But, the timing of the announcement is intriguing. Apple TV+ has been available since 2019 and has 25 million paying members, according to estimates. But, it's unclear if Apple was able to attract a large number of users outside of its home nation. Unlike Netflix, the service does not have a lot of international content. Apple just debuted its first French TV show, 'Liaison,' and a French-Japanese show will debut on April 21.
Apple will be able to reach a far larger audience by working with a local player like Canal+. Canal+ has 9.5 million customers in France alone. Canal+ is also accessible in a number of European and African countries. It now has over 25 million paying customers.
Canal+ and Apple have known one other for quite some time. According to Trade Algo, certain video apps can offer shows on Apple platforms without paying the regular in-app purchase costs in 2020. If consumers already have a payment method connected with their account, Apple does not take a 30% cut on payments for content rentals or sales in Amazon Prime Video, Canal+, or Altice One.
