As part of Microsoft MSFT +0.56% 's latest venture into artificial intelligence, the company is now offering AI-driven services aimed at helping telecommunications companies manage their networks more effectively. This move is intended to take aim at Amazon AMZN +0.24% as both technology companies try to reap the benefits of the telecoms industry's move toward cloud-computing platforms as they look to gain a competitive advantage.
It is reported that Microsoft Corp. (ticker: MSFT) has launched a new cloud platform that is AI-enabled for telecom companies named Azure Operator Nexus. The information has already been provided to AT&T T -0.18% (T), the company announced late Sunday evening.
“We have already released Azure Operator Nexus to our flagship customer, AT&T, and we are very happy with how well the results have been. As a result, we are currently in the process of selectively working with operators from around the world for possible deployments," Yousef Khalidi, a corporate vice president at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post.
There is high pressure on the telecommunications industry to show better returns on investments in 5G networks at the world’s largest telecoms show, Mobile World Congress, which starts on Monday. Nexus is Microsoft's answer to increasing the efficiency of carriers' networks through the use of artificial intelligence and automation.
Microsoft is taking on Amazon Web Services as it looks to expand its market share in the area of cloud-computing services for telecoms by competing against Amazon Web Services. It was announced last week that Amazon (AMZN) had launched its Amazon Web Services Telco Network Builder, which it said would make it easier for telecom companies to build their cloud operations on Amazon Web Services.
