Self-driving car technology is better suited to manufacturing, according to BYD, the largest seller of electric cars in China.
As reported by Trade Algo, BYD spokesman Li Yunfei told the news outlet that fully autonomous cars are still a long way off, according to the press release.
In their comments on Tuesday at the Shanghai auto show, BYD (ticker BYD.HK) worked with translators to provide their comments in Mandarin.
In an interview recorded by the press, a spokesman for the company was reported as saying that the goal of having fully autonomous cars might be impossible given concerns related to safety, regulations, and ethics.
This same technology, however, offers the possibility of creating robots that need not sleep or take breaks throughout the course of a working day.
Even so, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about how far robots can be trained to perform welding or assembly tasks, he explained.
