According To A Stanford Study, Here Are The AI Jobs

April 5, 2023
minute read

There has been a huge investment in artificial intelligence technology by venture capital firms and large tech companies over the past decade, and the Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence of Stanford University estimates that these investments will result in more than 800,000 AI-related job openings in 2022 across the United States.

This data is presented in the AI Index Report 2023 presented by the Institute, which consists of data on investment, employment, the impact of artificial intelligence on the environment, and the ethical implications for users derived from across the industry.

There were nearly 142,000 AI-related jobs posted in California in 2022, the report said, citing data from Lightcast to indicate that the state was the top state for AI-related hiring. Microsoft was founded in California, the state where the company was born

This is a good time to mention that Google and Meta, two big tech companies with strong AI wings, have backed OpenAI.

Texas, New York, and Florida, three states with high populations, were also among the top states in the league tables.

In comparison with other parts of the country, some of those regions that aren't generally known as major tech hubs have been doing well in the hiring game.

In general, AI-related job openings account for around 5% of all job openings in any given state. The number of AI-related job postings was nearly twice what the national average was in Washington, D.C.; that is, nearly 3% of the job listings were related to AI. The state average for smaller states was also higher than the national average for states such as Delaware (2.66%) and Arkansas (2.03%).

The report noted that the amount of collaboration between academics in AI research has been dwarfed by that of private industry. The U.S. and China continue to be the first countries to engage in collaborative research, a trend that has been gaining momentum since 2010, but slowed in 2021 due to a slowdown in funding. It was stated in the report that, in 2022, there were ten times as many models being produced by non-academic research being conducted by private companies or think tanks as there were being produced by academic research.
