A Rollable Smartphone From Motorola Has A Vertically Extending Screen

February 28, 2023
minute read

Using a slide-up mechanism, Motorola has demonstrated a concept smartphone that rolls out as soon as the user slides it up.

With a flexible five-inch display that can be extended to 6.5 inches when pushed upwards, the phone will be on display at the Mobile World Congress tech conference in Barcelona from February 22-26.

There is also the added convenience of being able to fit the device into your pocket very easily, which will allow for better productivity and multitasking.

The phone won't be available anytime soon, for sure. Since it is still at the concept stage, it is impossible to predict how much the phone will cost at this point.

A Statista report shows that Motorola is no longer a major player in the mobile industry - the company shipped 51 million units in 2021, according to the data collected by the company.

The design at least shows innovation in a market that has struggled to come up with new features that will entice consumers to purchase.

With the advent of new form factors, such as folding displays, companies are hoping to change this.

“There have been a number of concept products experimenting with the wide variety of form factors that can be achieved with flexible display technology recently, which highlights the explosion of innovation underway,” Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told Trade Algo.

This device is coming at a time when smartphone makers are having a hard time.

There has been a decline in sales in the mobile industry of 11.3% in the last year as consumers tightened their belts as a result of tighter budgets, which has exaggerated a continued trend of consumers holding onto their phones for longer as upgrades from major players have become incremental.

It was also announced at the conference this week that Lenovo, who owns Motorola, is working on a rollable laptop. The laptop works as if it were a phone. It slowly rises vertically, allowing you to see more of a web page or have multiple apps open on the same screen at the same time.
